Home-made to measure
Ascorbic Acid + Sodium Bicarbonate = Sodium Ascorbate + Carbon Dioxide
Pure ascorbic acid is acidic, quite sour. Sodium Ascorbate is neutral, it has a faint salty taste. They have a similar Vitamin C content.
Add sodium bicarbonate to ascorbic acid and that’s it!! Sodium ascorbate in a fizzy drink!
Ascorbic Acid is as potent as a pharmaceutical. But it’s an acid, it tastes acidic .. that’s sour. For a lot of people it’s unpleasant. That’s why it’s sold in tablets with sweeteners (like saccharin).
Ascorbic acid can be “buffered”, or “neutralised”. There are two common forms of buffered ascorbate – calcium ascorbate and sodium ascorbate. Added calcium may affect deeper bodily systems, whilst sodium is the preferred option because added sodium is flushed out in the urine cycle.
Sodium ascorbate powder is but it doesn’t seem to have the shelf life of pure ascorbic acid. Because high dose ascorbic acid is an essential frontline remedy it’s good to always keep enough stored in the panty .
The recipe
For one measure of Ascorbic Acid add a half measure of Sodium Bicarbonate.
- Fill a glass half full of pure water.
- Add Ascorbic Acid & Bicarb Soda.
- Stir and wait for fizzing to subside.
- Add a dash of lemon or other citrus juice
- Fill glass with water
- Drink and enjoy!
Tips
- Start with a half dose- 1/2 tsp ascorbic acid, 1/4 tsp bicarb.
- A level 5ml spoon = 5 gm Vitamin C, a good daily average for most people.
- Don’t pre-mix the powders, they’ll soon oxidise.
Creates a refreshing Vitamin C drink – ample “buffered” ascorbic acid (as sodium ascorbate) with bio-flavonoids and minerals that come with fruit.
