Vitex agnus-castus – berry part

Chaste Tree has been shown to be effective in the treatment of menopausal symptoms, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), premenstrual dysphoric disorder, dysmenorrhoea, luteal phase defects, premature ovarian failure, and infertility in both men and women. Dopaminergic compounds in vitex help to treat cyclical mastalgia as well as other symptoms of the premenstrual syndrome.

Indications

Menstrual disorders including:
▪ irregularities of the menstrual cycle
▪ infertility
▪ habitual miscarriage
▪ symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and/or menopause
▪ hormonally induced acne (in both sexes)
▪ cyclical breast pain and benign breast disorders
▪ ovarian cysts
▪ fibroids
▪ endometriosis
▪ latent hyperprolactinaemia
• to help re-establish the cycle after use of the contraceptive pill
• to aid the expulsion of the placenta after birth
• postnatal depression
• lactation support (low doses only)

May aggravate pure spasmodic dysmenorrhoea not associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Can affect hormones in the body and may interact with prescription medicines such as oral contraceptives.

People with tumours sensitive to oestrogen or progesterone should avoid using this herb until safety can be established. It has been suggested that the ability of chastetree to reduce prolactin levels may inhibit medical investigations and may mask diagnosis and proper treatment of prolactinoma.

Use moderately during breastfeeding.

Vitex agnus-castus 1:2. Each 1 ml contains 500mg of dry herb.

Liquid extract in 45% ethanol. Use 5 to 30 ml weekly.
